Most pharmaceutical companies have multiple nitrogen uses andpurity demands. The balances of most pharmaceutical applications areblanketing, inerting and sparging (99.9%-99.99%). The latter is by far thelargest demand, accounting for most of the nitrogen use in the facility.
Chemical Plant

Nitrogen is used to inert the headspace in chemical storage orprocess tanks. The purpose of nitrogen is to defeat hazardous or explosiveenvironments, or because of the adverse effect oxygen has on certain chemicals.Infinity has a nitrogen generating system that can work for either situation.
Wave Solder and Semi-Conductor

High purity nitrogen isused in many solder applications. Its benefits include reduced dross on solderpots, and reduced surface tension, which allows solder to cleanly break awayfrom the solder site. Purities typically range from 99.99% to 99.9995%, butconsult your manual for exact requirements. Controlled nitrogenatmospheres in reflow, wave, selective, and rework applications give engineersa larger process arena to work in. Nitrogen also helps during the liquidousstate while the solder is completing surface wetting for a good bond. We begantesting PSA N2 generation with reflow and found that purity levels required forreflow, wave and selective soldering range from 99.5% to 99.99%.
Heat Antomotire Treatment

Kilns and furnaces used for heat treating may be underpressure;that classifies them as autoclaves that require a greater volume of N2.Kilns and furnaces may also be used as a melting device. All of these processeshave one enemy – oxygen. O2 discolors the product, and candangerously weaken it. Any metal over 600° F will oxidize in the presence of O2.The purity for most metal applications is at most 99.99%;pressure 30-100 PSIG.Most are purge and fill applications that can be accommodated with larger ormultiple N2 surge tanks instead of pressure-boosting compressors
Curing

Ovens, and curing facilities for materials such as metal, carbon fiber, Kevlar,and other high strength fibers (particularly preparer) are an ideal applicationfor generated non-cryo nitrogen. Maintaining a dry, oxygen free atmosphereprevents oxidation on metals, regardless of the temperature. Resins cure morequickly, evenly and without bubbles in the dry, low O2 atmosphere of a nitrogeninerted oven. The quick drop in O2 is provided by a surge tank sized properlyto inert the oven while the consistent, continuous flow of an N2 generationsystem maintains the atmosphere continuously throughout the entire cycle.
Bright Annealing

Because of the potential for oxidation, bright annealingrequires high purity nitrogen when the oven temperature is over 1,500° F,however, the greatest volume of N2 is needed during the coolingphase. As the temperature drops, the percentage of O2 in the productstream can go up without any oxidation to the product. To this end, ourproprietary purity selector switch/purity exchange valve is a perfect fit forannealing. The N2 system can be tuned down to deliver very highpurity N2 as well. As the temperature goes down during the coolingprocess, the PFX valve can be adjusted to a different purity. Regardless of howit’s done, the annealing process is perfectly mated with PSA N2
Brazing & Soldering

Brazing is a process that is well matched for PSA generated N2.We’ve done extensive testing with the most discerning of customers, and foundthat either 100 ppm N2 or 99.99% nitrogen provides a blanket overthe product that prevents deodorization and oxidation. At 99.9% purity, somedeodorization occurs, but there is still very little oxidation and nostructural impact on the braze itself. Your choice of purity is reallydependent only on the importance of the finished look of your product.
